St. John's, Newfoundland in Canada offers historic venues, elegant reception facilities and picturesque ceremony locations.

Couples planning a wedding in St. John’s have a variety of ceremony and reception sites to choose from. For a traditional church ceremony, they may want consider one of the city’s historic churches, such as the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist or the Roman Catholic Basilica. Hotels that are popular for hosting receptions include The Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland and The Battery Hotel. For couples searching for something a little different, here are a few ideas.

Bowring Park

A favourite site for wedding photos, Bowring Park is also a beautiful location for an outdoor wedding ceremony. While ceremonies are permitted anywhere in the park, including the amphitheatre, most couples choose to get married on the lawn of the Bungalow. These grounds provide a lush green backdrop for a magical ceremony. With its wraparound veranda, stone fireplace and gleaming hardwood floors, the Bungalow makes a charming reception hall.

The building can accommodate 170 people for a cocktail reception or 130 for a sit-down dinner. For larger weddings, a rented tent can be set up on the lawn. Red Oak Catering will prepare a sumptuous menu for receptions at the Bungalow.

Fluvarium

The Fluvarium is a scenic spot for both wedding ceremonies and receptions. A ceremony on the Fluvarium grounds will offer fabulous surrounding views of Long Pond and Pippy Park. The meeting facility holds 100 people for a seated meal or 200 for a standing reception.

A large fieldstone fireplace creates a cozy atmosphere, while the deck will give guests an opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of the park. They will also enjoy observing Nagle’s Hill Brook through the Fluvarium’s underwater viewing windows.

Waterford Manor

For couples interested in tying the knot in a historic setting, the Victorian style Waterford Manor is the perfect site. The inn’s living room is an ideal ceremony location for weddings with 50 guests or less, while the main or back dining room provides space for larger weddings. An outdoor ceremony allows couples to take advantage of the manor’s gazebo and quaint garden area.

The manor can accommodate 120 people for a cocktail reception or 70 for a sit-down dinner. The rental fee includes full use of the ground floor and outside property. With its antique furnishings and elegant ambiance, the Waterford Manor sets the scene for a memorable wedding day.

Johnson Geo Centre

The Johnson Geo Centre is a truly original venue for wedding receptions. The underground museum, situated on Signal Hill Road, showcases the geological features of Newfoundland and Labrador and the planet. Its three-storey high reception hall is home to amazing replicas of the planets of the solar system.

This extraordinary facility seats 200 people for a meal and can hold 300 for a stand-up reception. Guests may have an opportunity to tour the centre’s exhibits, which chronicle the earth’s history.

St. John’s Golf Courses

Several golf clubs in the St. John’s area also have facilities to host wedding ceremonies and receptions. They include:

  • Bally Haly Golf and Curling Club, which can accommodate 130 guests for a sit-down dinner or 200 for a cocktail reception. The clubhouse offers stunning views of the golf course and Signal Hill.
  • The Wilds at Salmonier River, located an hour outside the city, can facilitate up to 250 guests. From June 1 to September 30, couples have the option of an onsite ceremony using the scenic river as a backdrop.
  • The banquet hall at GlenDenning Golf Course seats 250 people or holds 350 for a stand-up reception. Onsite ceremonies are available.
  • Admiral’s Green Clubhouse has space for a sit-down meal of 130 people or 250 for a cocktail reception. Guests will enjoy views of St. John’s, Signal Hill and the Atlantic Ocean.

St. John’s offers a wide array of wedding venues, all of which can provide a magical setting for the bride and groom’s special day.
