From a ceremony on the water to a reception in an historic site, Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada has a number of original settings for an unforgettable wedding.

Halifax hotels have a lot to offer the bride and groom. Things such as wedding packages, a honeymoon suite and onsite catering are definite advantages to holding a wedding celebration at a hotel. However, many couples may be looking for a more unique location for their special day. The following are a few suggestions of interesting ceremony and reception venues in the Halifax area.

Hatfield Farm

Hatfield Farm is located in Hammonds Plains, just minutes outside Halifax. This one-of-a-kind venue provides the perfect setting for a country-style wedding. A horse-drawn wagon will take guests along a scenic trail to the ceremony, which can be held indoors or outdoors.

The farm’s reception facility, Clayton Lodge, accommodates up to 200 people for a western themed celebration. Throughout the evening, guests can enjoy an indoor games centre called the Rubber Rodeo or relax in front of a roaring bonfire.

Hatfield Farms provides a Justice of the Peace, a DJ and overnight accommodations for wedding guests.

St. Mary’s Boat Club

St. Mary’s Boat Club is a picturesque spot for wedding ceremonies and receptions. The facility, located in a residential section of south end Halifax, is available to rent from mid-April to mid-December.

The spacious reception hall on the upper level of the boathouse seats 200 people for a sit-down meal. The wraparound deck offers panoramic views of the Northwest Arm, forested landscape and the majestic Dingle Tower.

Maritime Museum of the Atlantic

The Small Craft Gallery of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic can be transformed into an elegant reception site. This downtown facility is available to rent when closed to the general public. It can accommodate 90 people for a sit-down meal and 250 for a stand-up reception. Guests will be treated to views of the historic Halifax waterfront and get a taste of marine history while admiring the gallery’s maritime collections.

Pier 21 National Historic Site

For a memorable wedding set against an historical backdrop, couples may want to consider Pier 21. This waterfront museum explores the history of Canadian immigration through various exhibits. Pier 21 has a number of venues designed to accommodate weddings of all sizes. The museum’s facilities are available for both ceremonies and receptions. These include:

  • Kenneth C. Rowe Heritage Hall
  • Chrysler Canada Welcome Pavilion
  • Rudolph P. Bratty Exhibition Hall
  • Ralph and Rose Chiodo Harbourside Gallery

Point Pleasant Park

With views of the sea, sky and forest, Halifax’s most popular park is a scenic location for a wedding ceremony. Halifax Regional Municipality permits small ceremonies and photo shoots within the park. Couples are required to submit an application form providing details of the event.

Weddings on the Water

Halifax Harbour is home to a number of ships that set the stage for a romantic wedding excursion. Couples interested in a celebration on the water may want to consider one of the following:

  • Tall Ship Silva. Set sail on a beautifully refurbished schooner that accommodates 150 people. With an elegant banquet room for a sit-down dinner and a large open deck for holding ceremonies, Tall Ship Silva is a perfect venue for a wedding on the harbour.
  • Harbour Queen I. This is a Mississippi-style sternwheeler that has been hosting party cruises in Halifax since 1986. It can hold up to 194 guests, who will have use of a lower enclosed deck and an upper deck from which to view the passing scenery.
  • Mar. A 75 foot tall ship, the Mar is a popular tour boat based in Halifax Harbour. It can accommodate intimate weddings of up to 46 guests.
