Love song lyrics make fabulous wedding readings for couples who don’t want anything religious, and are looking for something lighter than the traditional poems. Look up lyrics of some older love songs as well as more modern favourites.
If the song is too long, use the first couple of verses, or select the bits that work well to create a wedding reading.
- Because You Loved Me - Celine Dion. The lyrics of this love song could not fail to make a bride and groom feel special: "For all those times you stood by me / For all the truth that you made me see / For all the joy you brought to my life / For all the wrong that you made right /For every dream you made come true / For all the love I found in you"
- At Last - Etta James. This classic sounds like it was written as a love poem. The first couple of lines are: "At last, my love has come along / My lonely days are over /And life is like a song /Oh, yeah, at last /The skies above are blue /My heart was wrapped up in clovers / The night I looked at you"
- Come What May - Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. Beautifully romantic, this would be perfect for a wedding reading. "Never knew I could feel like this /Like I've never seen the sky before /Want to vanish inside your kiss / Everyday I love you more and more"
- B.B. King - The Glory of Love (More recently covered by Bette Midler ) Love song lyrics with a touch of realism, they end like this: "We've got the world and all its charms /And when the world is through with us /We've got each other's arms / You've got to win a little, lose a little /Yes, and always have the blues a little / That's the story of /That's the glory of love"
- Savage Garden - Truly Madly Deeply. This love song may be a little too long, but the chorus works well as a wedding reading, perhaps with one other verse. Chorus: "I want to stand with you on a mountain / I want to bathe with you in the sea /I want to lay like this forever / Until the sky falls down on me..."
- Evergreen - Barbra Streisand. The gentle words of this song makes perfect wedding poetry: "Love, soft as an easy chair / Love, fresh as the morning air /One love that is shared by two / I have found with you."
- The Marriage March - Leonard Cohen. Although Leonard Cohen's voice can sound depressing, the words of his love songs are often very beautiful and this one is no exception: "The whole work holds its breath again / The marriage ring it shines / The billionth trillionth walk begins /As another world sighs /Sights and best of wishes and / A silence you can hear / The vow that breaks the world are spoke / And the whole world sheds a tear"
